Full Description

Remains of a bridge in the cellar of number 2 Bridge Street. Beside the existing 14th century bridge over the Buddle is another arch, formerly a bridge but now in a cellar under number 2 Bridge Street. The arch is two-centred, of two orders and looks 13th century. The outer order has a sort of plain beak-head moulding. About 8ft under the arch is blocked. The Arch is flanked by an ashlar wall on either side of the same size and character, its condition is fair (1)
Perhaps 13th century (2) Could hardly have been original bridge for main river as it is too small. Was it a maritime store? (3)
As described in (1). Some brick runs from the top to corrugated underside of the modern pavement. Service pipe runs along wall to left of arch and up throughout the concrete to projection, so stonework not damaged. Arch has lost some of its outer decorated order on the left side, but otherwise in good condition (5)

'(39) BRIDGE, carrying Bridge Street over the river Buddle, is of local stone rubble with dressings of the same material. The arch has a span of 18 ft. and is segmental-pointed; the soffit had originally four chamfered ribs, two of which have been removed. The bridge is probably of the 14th century but the roadway was widened on both sides in 1913. About 15 yards to the E. is another stone arch, formerly a bridge but now a cellar to Nos. 2 and 3 Bridge Street. It is two-centred and has a span of 8 ft. It is faced with rough ashlar and the exposed face is of two oders, the outer having simple zig-zag cutting. The work is perhaps of early 13th-century date.'
