Full Description

(ST 88790638) EASTWAY HOUSE is in the part of East street which was spared by the 1731 fire, but Bastard's town plan shows a building close to the street whereas the present house is set appreciably back from the building line; hence the house is probably of the post-fire period. The main doorcase and the shaped parapet and urns of the N. front are perhaps mid 18th-century additions to a facade of c. 1735. The plan is two rooms deep and is covered with a double roof, but the rear drawing-room may be another addition of c. 1750. The N. front shows interesting rococo tendencies and the rococo plasterwork of the interior is noteworthy. <1-2>
