Listed Building record MDO10456 - Tunnel entrance to railway beneath Poundbury Camp, Dorchester
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
1857. The tunnel was built after Brunel had been persuaded not to drive a cutting through the Camp. His most influential persuader was the Rev William Barnes, Rector of Winterborne Came, the Dorset dialect poet, and the initial impetus behind the foundation of the Dorset County Museum. The tunnel is an early instance of civil engineering respecting ancient monuments, and its entrances are included for that reason. Red brick. Band. Parapet. Curved flanking walls. Rusticated ashlar voussoirs.
