Full Description

Pear Tree Cottage (SY 70549976) is single-storeyed with attics and walls of banded flint and coursed rubble with thatched roofs. The present cottage was built in the second half of the 16th century but the records of tenancy extend back to the beginning of the same century. The building is of interest in that its history is well documented and it retains an unusual number of original features. In 1506 and 1771 the property was regarded by its owners, Hyde Abbey and Winchester College, as two tenements; therefore it is liekly that it was built as two dwellings with a common through-passage. <1>
