Description

The restoration of the southeast range on the High Street frontage of Scaplen's Court in 1985 provided the opportunity for two small excavations in areas to be disturbed by the building works. A watching brief was also carried out during the restoration works. A 5m by 3m area in the south corner of the range revealed a stone slab floor in use in the 16th century and the remains of foundations of an earlier stone building of c. 1300. Parts of the earlier foundations had been used by the later Scaplen's Court structure. The watching brief revealed that the front wall of Scaplen's Court contained much iron-foundry clinker and may have been restored/replaced in the early 20th century. (3)
