Description

A series of small scale excavations were conducted by Wessex Archaeology over a four year period from 1987 during the demolition and redevelopment of a housing estate at Bell's Orchard covering one tenth of the walled town. The first phase of archaeological evaluation was carried out in December 1986 in the back garden of 29 Bell's Orchard (address has changed since redevelopment) in order to investigate an extensive soil accumulation revealed in boreholes. This soil contained almost exclusively post medieval pottery, altough to the base the soil colour changed and it contained late 11th-14th century pottery. Two post holes were cut into this horizon. [1] Site code: W166/31312.
