Description

J B Calkin undertook the excavation of two pits at Swanage Quarries during 1931. His attention seems to have been drawn to the site following the discovery of human remains during blasting at the quarry circa 1930. Calkin recorded evidence for occupation from the Early Iron Age through to the Late Roman period, including extended burials in cists. He exaimined two pits, one contained mixed types of Iron Age pottery including late 'Belgic' forms [1]. At least one of the pits was cut into 2ft into the limestone bedrock and contained largely late Iron Age pottery, as well as two bone needles [2] and waste from the shale armlet industry including at least one roughout and core [3].
