Description
Poole Museums Service excavated a site at 11 East Street over a weekend in July 1978 after the 1920's house on the site had been demolished. The site lay on the north side of East Street east of its junction with Moretons Lane.
A 4m by 2m trench was laid out 5.6m from the pavement revealing the walls of an eighteenth century house, and a disturbed dark layer around this foundation. There was a wall footing and rough paving? Of rubble and oyster shells and part of a quern, A slot was found containing medieval pottery and 2 post holes. At the N end of the trench an E-W irregular but deep feature was found and not fully excavated. A second trench also 4m by 2m was excavated 8m from the N end of the property. It contained humic soil down to natural sand with no features but 2 small pieces of Roman pottery and 25 medieval wares.
