Description
Two one metre square test pits were excavated adjacent to the site of the dragonfly pond excavated in 1984 in the Nursery Garden, Hengistbury Head. The test pits were excavated by Helen Lewis as part of a PhD thesis at the University of Cambridge. The test pits were dug to investigate in more detail the ancient cultivation traces (Late Iron Age and Roman period spade marks and plough marks) found in the 1984 excavations and carry out for thin section study of the features and soil indicators. Profile inversion indicators were noted suggesting the spade mark horizon displays a kind of 'double digging' and the furrow horizon was created by Roman mouldboard ploughing.
