Description

AC archaeology undertook a desk-based assessment of a substantial portion of the southwest part of Bridport, largely to the south of Gundry Land and Foundry Lane, to the west of the properties along South Street and to the east of the River Brit. (1) The assessment includes a rapid assessment of the documentary and cartographic evidence. There is a discussion of the development of the town including the nature and topography of the Saxon and medieval settlement, its relationship to Brydian and the possible harbour; the holdings of St Michael’s Chantry and its connection with ‘Priory Orchard’; and aspects of the rope industry. (1) A number of observations were made during a site visit on the location of a number of earthwork banks and sunken lanes along Priory Lane. (1)
