Description

Trial trenches excavated along preferred Brown Route for proposed Weymouth to Dorchester road improvement. Final stage of evaluation including desk based assessment and field evaluation. At Southdown Ridge recovery of sparse scatter of worked flint and small number of abraded sherds of Iron Age and Roman pottery although no extensive archaeological remains. Possible lynchet or field boundary in trench at The Knoll. Trenches through lynchets/field terraces at Lower Bincombe revealed only post-medieval artefacts. On Ridgeway Hill two Late Neolithic pits were discovered and Bronze Age barrow cemetery group re-examined. Trenches through ancient field system produced very little direct evidence.
