Description
The desk-based assessment was commissioned to facilitate Scheduled Monument Clearance and Planning consent. The study area contains the Verne Citadel, designated a Scheduled Monument with associated listed buildings, and the area has archaeological remains from almost every period of human history. Palaeolithic and Mesolithic flints have been recovered from fissures in the basal rock, Neolithic and BA artefacts show extensive human presence and there have been discoveries of extensive IA and Roman cemeteries. The assessment notes the potential for terrestrial and maritime study.
