Description

Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological desk-based assessment (including 2 site visits) of Poole Pottery, prior to redevelopment. The Poole Pottery site was reclaimed from the sea after East Quay was extended in the early 1900s. The reclamation deposit is between 0.9m and 2.4m thick. Oyster shell deposits, probably from the 17th century oyster bank, and a large timber obstruction were found during geotechnical borehole investigation on the site. The remains of an earlier lime kiln incorporated into the pottery were noted, together with a number of important decorative tile plaques and decorations.
