Description

Archaeological evaluation comprising geophysical survey and trial trenching in advance of topsoil strip. Archaeological interest in the area primarily centred on the proximity of the field to medieval farmstead at Wytch, evidence of which survives nearby in the form of ridge and furrow (cropmark and earthwork). 28 trial pits were dug, 10 of which were located on geophysical anomalies, the remainder being randomly located. Ten trial pits revealed subsoil plough marks, all being located in the western and south western parts of the field. Post-Medieval pottery was recovered from one pit. Iron fragments were recovered from 2 pits.
