Description
Wessex Archaeology undertook a desk-based assessment of seven proposed sites for the construction of a Sewage Treatment Works in the vicinity of West Bay, between 1995 and 1996. Site A lies within Symondsbury Parish, centred on SY 4590 9164 and is in farmland, comprising a number of different fields. No archaeological monuments or findspots were recorded within the area of this site. The field-name Ways Mead in one of the fields may indicate an earlier track or route, but no trace of this was found. (1)
Site B lies within the parish of Burton Bradstock, centred on SY47009050 and consisted a single pasture field. No archaeological monuments or findspots are recorded from this area. However, within 150m there are an earthwork enclosure, trackway, and a rectangular structure visible on aerial photographs and which were suggested as being prehistoric or Roman in date. (1)
Site E lies within the parish of Burton Bradstock, centred on SY47749032 and consisted of a single arable field. No archaeological monuments or findspots are recorded from this area. However, it lies within 400m of the remains identified on aerial photographs described above. (1)
Site F lies within the parish of Bridport, centred on SY46506090380 and comprising the Wessex Water West Bay Headworks Pumping Station. No archaeological monuments or findspots are recorded from this area. (1)
Sites 1, 2, and 3 lie within the parish of Bothenhampton , centred on SY47009065, SY47179066 and SY47259078 respectively and all lie within agricultural land. No archaeological monuments or findspots have been recorded from these sites. (1)
