Description

During February and March 1996, a watching brief was carried out on behalf of Shell UK Limited during groundworks at the former oil terminal at Hamworthy. Previous work in the area has shown that the site lies in an area of considerable archaeological potential. However, no archaeological deposits or artefacts were observed during the watching brief. The investigation showed that groundworks associated with construction and use of the former terminal were extensive, and may have destroyed any remains on the site. However, there is still potential for archaeological deposits below the level of ground disturbed by decontamination works to the north and east of the site. (1)
