Description

Wessex Archaeology carried out a desk-based assessment on land in the vicinity of Home Barn, on land within the area of a proposed development. The development area is at the south of the village of Bradford Peverell and is currently in use by farm buildings, yards and for storage. None of these farm buildings are earlier than 19th century date. The desk based assessment made use of the Dorset County Sites and Monuments Record and the Dorset County Record Office, as well as maps in the form of Ordnance Survey first (1887) and second edition (1902) maps, and ‘A Plan of the Manor of Bradford Peverell, situate in the parish of Bradford Peverell in the County of Dorset’ (1771). A site visit was also carried out on the 20th of December 1995. The main archaeological feature with potential in the area is the Roman aqueduct which took its supply from the River Frome to Dorchester. The aqueduct is a scheduled ancient monument which stretches along the north-west side of the site. Other archaeological remains of potential also include Saxon burials to the east of Home Barn. These burials could indicate the location of a settlement near to the development site. The site does not lie within the extent of the medieval settlement of Bradford Peverell.
