Description
An archaeological assessment was carried out on land to the rear of 19-25 High Street Christchurch, Dorset in advance of proposed development. This comprised a review of historical sources, data held in the county sites and monuments record, historic buildings records and a detailed site inspection.
It was found that the rear boundaries of the properties are on the projected line of the western part of the late Saxon burh defences (SAM Dorset 831). The northernpart of the development area also falls with the scheduled area.
The documentary study traced occupation on the site as far back as 200 years ago, probably within plots dating back to the Saxon burh. Considering the relatively low probablilty of post-medieval and modern disturbance, it is though that the site has a high archaeological potential.
