Description

Two trial pits were observed by Steve Wallis prior to the redevelopment of the former Cornick’s Jam Factory. These were on the projected line of the 'muridge', the bank and ditch which marked the limit of the medieval town in this area (Short 1975). One trial pit was at the east end of the site revealed only 19th century topsoil and levelling layers. The other trial pit further to the west revealed the edge of a feature over 1.5m wide and 0.6m deep, from which a single sherd of medieval pottery (13th century?) was recovered.
