Description

Fieldwork carried in February 1987 to identify the extent of archaeological areas that might be affected by the backfilling of clay pits and lagoon construction. Trial trenches were dug by hand in areas where it appeared that the original (pre-quarrying) ground surface might still exist or survived buried, and by machine in other areas where accessible. The presence of archaeology was noted but any archaeological features encountered were left intact. One trench (Trench 9) was sited to investigate the potential for surviving archaeology beneath the embankment of the disused minerals railway; a large amount of Roman pottery was found here and archaeological features of Roman date were encountered in Trench 7 and Trench 8. Another trench (Trench 10) was sited to investigate the level area below the modern access track.
