Description

L J Keen conducted an archaeological watching brief on two trenches dug in order to repair the retaining wall on the east side of North Street adjacent to St Martin's Church during 1979. The trenches were located between the retaining wall of North Street and the West wall of the Church. The 15th century church wall was shown to have been built directly on top of natural white clay with no foundation trench. An earlier N-S aligned cut was visible in the trenches west of the church and truncated by the retaining wall of North Street. No dating evidence was recovered but it is thought that this cut may represent the original west wall of the nave. The deepening of North Street during the medieval period may have rendered this wall unstable necessitating its reconstruction to the east during the 15th century. [1]
