Description

In 1949 J B Calkin reported on the digging of trial holes between Hill Close and Woodhouse Hill, in a field where Roman pottery was seen during cultivation about 1940. Wall foundations in the form of chalk rubble were said also to have been found in this spot, and blocks of Purbeck Marble were found during the construction of a tennis court on the north side of Woodhouse Hill. Calkin reported that the trial holes revealed native pottery, a fragment of Samian, and some unworked fragments of Kimmeridge shale.
