Description

Excavations between 1961 and 1964 examined a small part of the medieval town, an area abandoned in the fourteenth century. The site chosen lay at one end and on the eastern side of the major hollow way through the area, nearest to where the centre of Wimborne was in the middle ages. The particular point selected exhibited two features, described as clefts or notches, characteristic of this hollow way and thought to indicate structures beneath. A trench was cut parallel to and some 30 feet to the east of the hollow way, in the hope of picking up the foundations of buildings possibly lying at right angles to the street. The eastern end of a building (House I) was located, and excavation extended to cover the whole of the space lying towards the street. The excavators defined four periods of activity: Period 1. Period 2. Period 3. Period 4.
