EDO981 - Iron Age settlement on Knowle Hill, Church Knowle; excavation 1956 and 1957

Description
Excavations by the RCHME on the largest of a number of ill-defined scoops on the north shoulder of Knowle Hill. This revealed a roughly circular depression about 24 feet across dug into the slope to a depth of around 3½ feet on the uphill side. Within this was a flat floor about 11 feet across into which were cut four post holes, interpreted as roof supports. Finds from the site included Iron Age ‘A’ pottery, Kimmeridge shale bracelets and animal bones, suggesting an economy based upon cattle and shale working.
