Description
A stone cist was discovered during building works in January 1965. This was excavated by Roger Peers and others. The cist was constructed from mortared flat limestone slabs with a flat stone lid and was aligned N-S. It contained a lead coffin, which was originally placed within a wooden coffin within the cist. The lead coffin contained the remains of an adult extended inhumation with the head to the south. Hobnails were also found within the coffin. (1)
A more precise location of the discovery 'under the dining room of 5 Watton Gardens' was provided by Frances Sanctuary, who excavated on the site (2).
