Description
OASIS: A review of the available evidence has found indication of archaeological remains within the study site, which comprises the potential remains of WWI or WWII training trenches, and 19th century quarry pits. There is also some potential for prehistoric remains in the northernmost part of the study site , and the potential for some Roman remains cannot be discounted due to the presence of the potential route of a Roman road along the route of Bere Road. Given the absence of any evidence suggestive of remains of high significance, such as substantive earthworks or artefactual finds, it is considered that any remains present are likely to be no more than local interest, with a possibility of regional interest over in the northernmost part of the study site with the barrows. The construction of the proposed development would remove any archaeological remains which may be present. However this assessment has shown that the study site has a low potential for any remains of high archaeological significance. Furthermore, current proposals would avoid development close to the barrows, so that any associated remains of interest there would be preserved. The loss of the limited potential archaeological interest of the study site could be fully mitigated by a programme of archaeological investigation, which could be secured as a normal part of the planning process in due course.
