Description
OASIS: An archaeological test pit evaluation was undertaken by AC archaeology during January 2024 on land to the rear of 12 West Street, Wareham, Dorset (centred on NGR SY 92243 87371). The evaluation comprised the machine excavation of two 1.5m by 1m test pits, located within and to the east of the footprint of a proposed new dwelling.
Project Results: Two pits cut into natural subsoil were exposed beneath a sequence comprising modern surfaces, 19th and 20th century levelling, and 19th century buried soil. Test Pit 1 exposed a pit at a depth of 0.5m below existing levels, which contained pottery of medieval date. Test Pit 2 exposed a pit at a depth of 0.7m below existing levels, which contained ceramic building material and roof tiles of 19th century date.
