Description

OASIS: Observation of the excavations recorded an homogenous and very compact loam containing occasional flint nodules and fragments of Purbeck stone roof tiles, rectangular in shape and measuring approximately 300mm by 200mm with a central nail hole at the top. Following the underpinning a brick floor surface was removed in the south east corner of the cellar and was reduced by approximately 100mm. This cut through a compact loam and exposed the top of a circular brick lined well approximately 1m in diameter with 2 iron bars remaining in situ which had supported a stone slab sealing the well-head. The water level was approximately 1.2m from the exposed top of the well.
