Description
The former cricket ground is a green space located within a planned development (from the 1860s onwards) of villas on the Dean Park Estate. The arrangement of Cavendish Road around the cricket ground indicates that this open space formed part of the planned development. The Newbery Steps Cricket Pavilion probably dates to the 1870s, and was supplemented by the Cooper Dean Cricket Pavilion in 1902; parts of the building remained in use until the recent past. A sequence of alterations to the building dating from the late-19th or early-20th century up to the later 20th century has been recorded from historic maps and from the building’s architecture. The most significant was the addition of a terraced balcony on its east side facing the cricket pitch.
