Description

A watching brief and limited excavation of the southern electricity depot was carried out. The main area of focus was on the two trenches of the early medival refuse pit starting in November 2000, which has to be completed in two phases due to health and safety and additional underpinning to a depth in total of 3.2m below the ground surface. 42 trences in all were were dug in varioues sizes and pieces of pottery and bone were collected and documented. The finds mainly of pottery recovered from the site dated from the early 12th Century up to 20th Century finds. With various features and stratigraphy throughout these dates. A total of 121 sherds were collected, with a minimum of 28 vessels, the best of which was a near complete 17th Century German Stoneware bellarmine jug.
