Description

The programme of archaeological monitoring comprised the observation of relevant groundworks during this period, and to record any archaeological features and finds which may be revealed or disturbed by the ground works for the new constructions on the site. The watching brief has provided evidence for medieval occupation away from the historic core of Shaftesbury and, although they may be considered to be domestic waste, the limited quantity of finds recovered from the cultivation soils and pits suggest that activity nearby was rather restricted in scale. Although the area observed was relatively small and the results generally modest, the presence of medieval remains and the apparent lack of any earlier features provide further evidence for the extents of historical settlement in the town.
