Description

Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of the proposed site of a new goat barn at New Barn Farm, Knowlton, Dorset. Two trenches were excavated to the south of the farmyard adjacent to the B3078. The remnants of the base of the bank of the South Circle henge was found just south of the farmyard with a well-preserved humic rendzina buried soil below. At the south end of the site, the top of a substantial ditch was revealed. This appears to be part of a ditch running along the south side of a coombe running down to the river Allen that may be part of a pair of ditches defining the coombe possibly associated with the South Circle Henge.
