Description

Observations and recording during piling for an extension to the Corn Exchange, and casual observations during groundworks for associated services. The site area was approximately 55 m2. Piling revealed natural chalk below a layer interpreted as probable post-medieval garden soil buried by terrace deposits for the nineteenth-century Market House. A well of possible medieval date was also recorded in a trench for a new drain in the car park.
