Description

Observations and recording carried out at short notice following the unexpected discovery of a well during groundworks for a new patio at the north-west corner of Colliton House. The top of natural chalk was exposed in the eastern part of the trench; elsewhere it was truncated at a depth of about 0.85m below ground level. A circular well shaft was cut into the natural chalk. At some time it had been modified to accept a chute that acted as a drain from the 18th-century part of Colliton House.
