EDO7853 - Melbury Bubb Manor House; building analysis 2013 to 2009

Unpublished archaeological analysis report conducted 04.09.13 by Peter Child of the listed building. Analysis possibly conducted in relation to the sale of the estate as refers to using the room names used by the estate agent. Archaeological analysis conducted of the materials, construction, structural history & dating of the manor house. 'Melbury Bubb Manor House is a picturesque historic building contributing to a fine rural landscape. It is a very complete small gentry house of essentially 17th century character and appearance but incorporating a medieval core which has influenced its later lay-out. This medieval core occupies the main range which retains a three-room cross-passage plan; it originally extended further to the north. The medieval house contained a hall open to the roof which was floored-in to provide two storeys in the 16th century, when the hall was given a lateral stack on its west side. In the second half of the 17th century the house was remodelled by the addition of two wings to its east front and the construction of a stair at its south end. At the same time the house was given a consistent external appearance in its fenestration and stonework. It has subsequently undergone little change except at its northern end where today’s kitchen is located. All these factors, combined with the survival of many good internal features, wholly justify its listing at the superior grade of 2*.'
