Description
Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief at Poole Pottery at the request of Chapman Lily Planning Limited on behalf of Fortitudo Ltd. All intrusive groundworks were monitored and non-archaeologically significant deposits were removed by the contractors under archaeological supervision. Before the start of groundworks, the Poole Pottery warehouse was demolished and the foundation removed causing a drop in elevation of the site by 0.5m.
No features or deposits of archaeological interest were observed and no artefactual material pre-dating the modern period was recorded. The extent of this deposit is unknown as the groundwork did not exceed a depth of 0.50m below the present ground level, but the natural geology was not exposed in this area.
Fragments of a clay tobacco pipe was recovered which is datable to the late 16th to the 19th century. Despite the archaeological potential of the site, the watching brief identified no archaeological remains within the area of observed groundworks.
