Description
Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in February 2021 during groundworks for provision of a new water main to the boiler room and re-routing of an electricity cable, requiring the digging of a trench around the south, east and north sides of the Abbey Church. On the east side the trench followed the course of an earlier cable trench. To the south of the church part of the extensive medieval and post-medieval graveyard was revealed to the south of the choir and transept. To the north, deposits were consistent with demolition of the sacristy and subsequent landscaping in the 1730s. Finds recovered included a small quantity of coarsewares of 12th to 13th- century date, and floor tiles belonging to the later church.
