Description

Wessex Archaeology undertook a watching brief during the construction of a new primary school building at Oswald Road, Winton. The topsoil was stripped off an area of about 2000 square metres was stripped down to the base of the topsoil and a number of linear features recorded. These proved to be modern fencelines. The subsoils were then stripped off by machine down to the top of the natural gravel. Two features were recorded at this depth: a V-shaped ditch containing Late Iron age pottery and a shallow pit with charcoal and evidence for burning in it, which may be contemporaneous.
