Description

NRHE: Assessment carried out in advance of proposed port expansion and 2012 Olympics development. The staging of the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games and the expansion of the commercial port on the Isle of Portland will stimulate regeneration and redevelopment of the harbour, port and whole island. Wessex Archaeology have been commissioned to undertake an assessment of the heritage resource of the island to help English Heritage and the local planning authority to engage with the Olympic planners and port development partners. The Isle of Portland has a rich industrial archaeolgical and military/naval heritage and also a significant but poorly understood archaeological one. A principally desk-based assessment of the heritage resource of the island will give a detailed review of the archaeological and historical development of the island.
