Description
In 1859 the Revd J H Austen investigated a surface scatter of material suggesting Roman occupation and including evidence of shale working. He found lathe-turned shale cores in a black soil, with one piece of finished shale core and some pieces of pottery. Mr Austen obtained 600 to 800 pieces from two excavations about a yard in diameter, while Mr Bond's labourers recovered a sack full.
