Description

Excavations by Mr G Toms in the north-west corner of Bagwood Coppice at the south side of the Roman road revealed a gravelled area overlying natural gravel and covered with a layer of cobbles. This gravelled area was dated to the late 3rd or 4th century. A few isolated post holes were cut into the cobbles, and above them was a deposit two feet thick of burnt occupation debris including daub and building rubble, dated to the 4th century by pottery and a few coins. Finds suggested occupation adjacent to the Roman road for at least 300 yards, with surface finds from the early 2nd to mid-4th century.
