Description

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Kier Southern to undertake a watching brief during ground works related to the stabilisation and repair works at HMP The Verne, Portland, Dorset, which is a Scheduled Monument (List Entry 1002411), also known as the Verne Citadel (NGR SY 69052 73856). The watching brief results confirmed that the site of The Verne has been subject to a considerable level of disturbance since its construction in the mid-19th century and subsequent modifications throughout the 20th century. No evidence for surviving archaeological features, early road surfaces or archaeological deposits was observed. Information from OASIS Online Form.
