Description
An archaeological evaluation carried out in May 2020 by Cotswold Archaeology. The evaluation consisted of one trench across the projected line of a stone-built tunnel noted during development 40m to the west. The tunnel was not encountered. A deposit of dark earth sealed three pits. One of the pits could not be dated but environmental evidence suggested a post-Roman date, the filling of the second contained late Saxon/earlier medieval pottery, while the filling of the third contained post-medieval pottery. The third pit was located along the projected line of the tunnel. The pit could not be fully excavated owing to the depth of the trench, but it may have been associated with the tunnel as a construction or exit pit.
