Description

Survey of records in Dorset, Somerset and Devon Record Offices was carried out to understand the use of Lambert's Castle as a place of a fair and a racecourse. It was used from 1709, but perhaps since 1459, when there was a fair granted within Hawkchurch parish. Maps, inventories, and newspapercuttings from the last known fair in 1954 were consulted. The site was acquired by the National Trust in 1956.
