Description

Observations and recording by Wessex Archaeology for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks during replacement of six 33kV electricity poles, three to the west and three to the north-west of Gussage St Michael. A trench was excavated by machine at the site of each replacement pole for the removal of the old pole and installation of the new pole and associated supporting sleeper. Five of the six locations were monitored by archaeologists. The trenches were cut through topsoil which mostly lay directly over natural chalk at depths between 0.2m and 0.37m below ground level, and the depth varied more in the northern part of the route. No archaeological features or deposits were observed. Some residual flint was recovered from topsoil at the locations of Pole 96 and Pole 97; this was core preparation flakes of probable Neolithic and Bronze Age date.
