Description

An evaluation consisting of the machine excavation of 21 trenches each measuring 50m by 2m. Of these, five trenches contained archaeological features and deposits, and these were in the eastern part of the site. A linear, east-west aligned ditch was recorded in Trench 2 and Trench 3. Pottery recovered from the upper filling of the ditch suggested a Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date, and it was interpreted as a probable field boundary, suggesting a wider field system in the area. Two small pits approximately 0.5m apart recorded in Trench 8 each contained a single filling with Middle Neolithic Peterborough Ware. A ditch was recorded in Trench 10, corresponding to a boundary ditch seen on historic maps, and considered to be relatively modern. A gully recorded in Trench 15 could not be dated but was thought likely to have a drainage function.
