Description
OASIS The Terrestrial Geophysics Service at Wessex Archaeology conducted a geophysical survey as part of an ongoing research and training project on land at Down Farm, Sixpenny Handley, Dorset. An area of 1.3ha was investigated through detailed magnetic gradiometry using a Bartington Grad601-2 dual sensor gradiometer system in 20m x 20m grids. The geophysical survey identified linear and amorphous anomalies of possible archaeological significance along with numerous weak linear trends and probable evidence for historic ploughing. An enclosure mapped from aerial photography and partially excavated adjacent to the survey area is not apparent in this dataset. This may indicate a low enhancement of the magnetic susceptibility of the site's soils through anthropogenic activity, although such magnetic properties were not investigated during this survey.
