Description

A desk-based assessment including a site visit undertaken on 21/01/2018 by Oakford Archaeology for Thread Architects on behalf of Mrs Alice Kennard in connection with the proposed installation of a new foul treatment plan and associated drainage at Forde Abbey. Sources consulted for the assessment included historic mapping, eighteenth century drawings and studies of the site, a sales catalogue of 1864 and a nineteenth century estate map. These, together with other sources, were accessed variously at the Devon Heritage Centre; the Westcountry Studies Library, Exeter; the Devon and Exeter Institution, Exeter; the Devon Historic Environment Record; the National Heritage List for England online; and the Heritage Gateway online. Further to an assessment of archaeological potential, the report conclusions identified possible amendments to the seven-phase development of the Abbey previously suggested by the RCHME (1972).
