Description

A watching brief was undertaken for Wyatt Homes during groundwork associated with the development of 7 new dwellings on a 0.3ha site comprising disused scrub land and former gardens to the south of 17-31 High Street, Puddletown. The site was divided into two areas, north and south, leaving an unstripped area where there was a boundary wall and buried and overhead services. A steep sided, flat bottomed ditch running north-east south west across the site was located. It measured at least 68m in length by 1.04 in width and with a maximum depth of 0.51m. There were two undated fills and a primary fill containing redeposited chalk pieces in fine clay silt 0.2m in depth. One base sherd of coarse sandy fabric pottery and two flint flakes in the topsoil deposit were dated to prehistoric. The ditch itself was probably a medieval or post-medieval property boundary.
