Description
A watching brief was commissioned by Peter Gunning & Partners on behalf of The Brewery Square Development Company as part of the redevelopment of the former Brewery site. The construction phases monitored included digging of trenches for services, roads and footpaths. During excavation for a new gas pipeline in Prince of Wales Road, two pits were found, one undateable and possibly a tree bole. The dateable pit (Pit 9) was c. 1m in diameter and sub-circular. It contained a plough damaged sarsen stone or fragment of one in the upper fill on the east side. The upper fill contained very small quantities of pottery, worked and burnt flint and unidentifiable animal bone. Close dating was not possible for the pottery but in view of the environmental context was likely to be Neolithic. The results for the flint were broadly the same.
